People across the North Woods will reflect on what veterans have accomplished and the freedoms they have protected during upcoming Veterans Day ceremonies.

Veterans Day programs are planned at schools in Eagle River, Three Lakes, Sugar Camp, Phelps and Rhinelander in the coming days. With Veterans Day on Sunday, Nov. 11, most programs are either on Friday, Nov. 9, or Monday,  Nov. 12.

The following programs have been announced:



Eagle River

Trinka-Weber-Rogers Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 8637 in Eagle River will join the students at Northland Pines Middle and High School, Land O’ Lakes Elementary School, SOAR Charter Middle School and Eagle River Elementary School to pay tribute to local veterans who have served or who are currently serving in the Armed Forces.

The Veterans Day service will begin at 9 a.m. Monday, Nov. 12, in the high school field house. Student speakers will make presentations, and the high school band and elementary students will take part in the ceremony.

The VFW Honor Guard will post and retire the colors. The Ladies Auxiliary will join in the program. The public and all area veterans are welcome.

After the program there will be coffee, cheesecake and cookies available in the commons for all veterans.

Three Lakes area

Veterans Day will be observed Friday, Nov. 9, in three programs at 9:30 and 10:45 a.m. in the Three Lakes School auditorium, and 1 p.m. at Sugar Camp Elementary School. The public is welcome to attend any or all of these patriotic observances.

Students of Three Lakes Elementary School will present the program at 9:30 a.m. Fourth-graders will give a short presentation. Two sixth-grade students will lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Echo Taps will be played. American Legion Post 431 Color Guard will assist.

American Legion Post 431 will conduct the program at 10:45 a.m. There will be featured guest speakers.

The Three Lakes High School band and chorus will provide music. The traditional roll call of servicemen from Three Lakes who were killed in action in World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War will be followed by taps and “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

The program at 1 p.m. will be presented by the children of Sugar Camp Elementary School, assisted by the Legion Color Guard.

The general public — especially all veterans, Legion and Auxiliary members — is welcome to attend one or all of these programs to acknowledge the sacrifices of American veterans of all wars and those now serving in uniform.



St. Germain


Staff and students at St. Germain Elementary School along with the Montessori Learning Center will hold a Veterans Day service at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12, in the gymnasium.

A student-led program will feature a local Boy Scout troop and student presentations, as well as patriotic music. Refreshments will be provided immediately following the program. Members of the public are welcome to attend.



Phelps

There will be a Veterans Day program in the Phelps School large gymnasium Friday, Nov. 9, at 10:30 a.m. hosted by the Phelps Student Council.

The program is being coordinated by teacher Kevin Grafwallner and will include a guest speaker, student speeches and music from the school band and choir under the direction of music teacher Lisa Duquaine.

Richard Owens, the commander of the VFW post in Land O’ Lakes, and other VFW members will be on hand. Representatives from the American Legion, AMVETS, and Sons of AMVETS will be in attendance.

All local veterans, their families, and other community members are welcome to attend the program. Following the program, all veterans and community members are welcome to join the elementary students for a free lunch.

Rhinelander

A Veterans Day ceremony will be held Friday, Nov. 9, at 8:30 a.m. in the auditorium at James Williams Middle School, located at 915 Acacia Lane, Rhinelander.

The seventh- and eighth-grade band and choir will perform and the guest speaker is Tammy Javenkoski, Oneida County Veterans Service Officer. Re­fresh­ments will be served following the ceremony.

The Oneida County Veterans Council, consisting of the American Legion, American Veterans, Disabled American Veterans, Marine Corps League and Veterans of Foreign Wars will hold a ceremony at 11 a.m. at the veterans monument on the Oneida County Courthouse lawn on Friday, Nov. 9. The Nativity of Our Lord choir will perform and the guest speaker is Rhinelander Mayor Chris Frederickson.

All citizens are welcome to attend these ceremonies to honor the men and women who served their country.

Lakeland Union

A program honoring veterans will be held at Lakeland Union High School Monday, Nov. 12, at 8:30 a.m. in the Lakeland Field House. Breakfast for veterans will be served before the program beginning at 7:15 a.m. For information, call (715) 356-5252.



Lac du Flambeau

The Lac du Flambeau school will hold a Veterans Day ceremony and luncheon Monday, Nov. 12, with the presentation from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. followed by a beef stew and cornbread meal for veterans at 10:45 a.m.

Arbor Vitae-Woodruff

The AV-W School District will hold a Veterans Day ceremony and luncheon Friday, Nov. 9, with an assembly set for 10:20 a.m. For information, call (715) 356-3282.



North Lakeland School

A ceremony honoring area veterans will be held at North Lakeland School in Boulder Junction Monday, Nov. 12, at 10:15 a.m. in the gymnasium. There will be lunch served for the vets after the program. RSVP’s are appreciated by calling (715) 543-8417.
