The Vilas Historical Museum in Sayner will celebrate its 60th birthday Friday, Aug. 16, with cake and free admission from 10 a.m. to noon.

The idea for a museum showcasing the rich history of Vilas County began on a cold, wintry day in the town hall with a group of young men. As the discussion grew so did the enthusiasm, and soon the area’s businessmen were offering materials and labor, with Carl Eliason donating the site.

Work began in April and Mabel DeWitt was offered the curator’s job. With so many supporting the museum, it was opened to the public on Aug. 16, 1959.

Guests are invited to stop in and see the world’s first snowmobile, fishing guides exhibit, clothing, dolls, motors and more. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Aug. 31, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 1-30. Admission cost is $4 for ages 10 and older.
