Anglers register a record 16 muskies at 41st Three Lakes Muskie Classic

Posted

Aug. 29 was a wet day, but that must have turned on the fish for the 41st Annual Three Lakes Muskie Classic that took place on the Three Lakes Chain of Lakes.

According to Co-director Lionel Kliss, registration was “right about where we like it” with 60 anglers taking part. Despite tough conditions, they managed to register, catch and release a record 16 fish measuring 34 inches or more. A 42-inch catch was the largest muskie.

Teams who caught fish were well rewarded for their efforts. “The classic always pays out cash for every registered fish. This year, teams received over $7,500 in cash prizes,” Kliss said.

Out of the 16 fish registered, five teams doubled (the classic has a two-fish limit for the day). A total of 11 teams registered fish.

Top finishers for 2026 included Randy Gordon of Elroy and Josh Johnson of Three Lakes; Jeff Liebscher and Adam Bricco, both of Three Lakes; and Ryan Bock of Three Lakes and Tim Rutzen, Junction City.

“It was also the closest tournament in years with less than one point separating the top three finishers.” Kliss added.

All prizes were awarded at the awards dinner Saturday evening taking place at the Big Stone Golf Course pavilion. Dinner was donated by the Three Lakes Fish and Wildlife Improvement Association. “Along with the awards presentation, there was a huge assortment of raffle prizes generously donated by many area businesses and individuals,” Kliss added.

“The not-for-profit muskie classic provides donations to Three Lakes Fish and Wildlife Improvement Association and other local charities and groups.

The 2027 Three Lakes Muskie Classic is scheduled to take place Saturday, Aug. 28. To keep abreast of the latest news and announcements, follow Three Lakes Muskie Classic on Facebook.
