The Three Lakes-Phelps varsity golf team recorded strong performances in Northern Lakes Conference meets at George Young Golf Course in Iron River, Mich., on May 11, and at McCauslin Brook Golf Course in Lakewood on May 14.
The Bluejays took another first-place finish in the meet with a 330 score in Michigan, while Crandon finished in second with a 348. Three Lakes followed that up with a 319 score at McCauslin.
“I’m so impressed with our consistent play up to this point. A few of the boys have gotten off to tough starts in matches but have been able to play through that and finish strong in the end,” mentioned Head Coach Michele Brown.
Three Lakes senior Grayson Polcaster paced the field for the top individual medalist with a 79 at George Young. Not very many strokes later, freshman Trenton Peterson finished in a three-way tie for second with an 80.
“Grayson continues to play extremely well for us. Trenton, while only a freshman, continues to put up some very impressive numbers,” said Brown.
Sophomore Sean Wallschlaeger followed those performances with an 83 for himself, and senior Levi Lurvey shot another score in the 80s with an 88.
Senior Matthew Klein rounded out the Jays with a great 12th-place finish with a 91.
Sean has been putting up solid numbers as well. Levi and Matthew are also upping their games.”
It was another double-digit stroke win for the Bluejays in this one. Three Lakes fired a 319 team score to beat out Crandon, who shot 332. Polcaster shared the top medalist spot with Crandon’s Reid Votis, with both shooting a five-over 75. Wallschlaeger followed suit and finished tied for fourth overall with a 79. Peterson continues to impress in his first high school golf season, with the freshman shooting a 10-over 80 for sixth individually. Lurvey was the fourth Bluejay inside the top 10 with his score of 85. Klein was just outside the top-10, tied for 11th with an 88.
The team also played at Hunters Glen Golf Course this past Friday, which will be the course the Bluejays play for regionals next week. Three Lakes shot a 326 as a team to sweep the week of first-place finishes.
Three-Lakes Phelps continues to perform with a strong core of golfers, who will look to make a run at regionals, sectionals, and even maybe a state tournament appearance in D3.
Bass Lake Country Club was the next test for the Bluejays this past Tuesday. The team will then take on Northwood Golf Course at an Invitational this Thursday, May 21, at 8:30 a.m. The Bluejays then go to Nicolet Country Club again for an Invitational on Friday, May 22, at 9 a.m.
