Bluejays move pieces around as they competed at Eagle relays

Posted

The Three Lakes-Phelps boys and girls track teams had to move some pieces around as they competed in Eagle River at the annual Eagle relays, which require three athletes from a team for field events and four for track events.

The boys team took sixth place with nearly 32 points, and the girls had 17 points for a seventh-place finish out of eight.

“We had several athletes competing in events that they normally don’t do, but it does make for a fun night,” said head coach Nate Koch. “Relay meets are tough on smaller schools like ours because we just don’t have the number of athletes to fill many relay teams. It definitely hurt our guys yesterday that we were missing two athletes. We ended up scratching two relay teams, and having to move some of our other runners around to fill gaps.”

Koch noted that sophomore Zach Weavers had an outstanding meet, as he was the top Bluejay thrower on the night.

Weavers took the top spot in the discus throw, outlasting Rhinelander’s Logan Schwinger and Greg Morgan of Chequamegon with a toss of 119 ft- 11 in. His throw was two feet better than the other two throwers.

He also took eighth place in the shot put, being less than a foot away from fifth.

“Zach set a new PR in discus and was the top thrower of the night, despite an injured quad muscle. So everyone was pretty excited for him,” stated Koch.

The team also had some other personal bests throughout the meet as well.

“Garrett Mandli set PRs in both the triple jump and long jump. He also tied his PR in the pole vault. And Traystyn Demith set a PR in shot put.”

Mandli, a sophomore, took ninth in the triple jump, with a leap of 33 ft.- 5 in. Freshman Masen Schoeneck also competed in the TJ and finished fifth in the event.

Mandli also PRd with a 15 ft.- 11.5 in. jump in the long jump.

On the girls side, senior Sophia Nafziger tied for 10th place by vaulting six feet and sophomore Vivianna Cruckson tied for 14th by vaulting five feet. Sophomore Somerr Ridgeway grabbed a top-10 finish in ninth, with a discus throw of 61 ft- 1 in.

The team returned to the track for one meet this week, which was held Tuesday of this week at Wausau East.
