He was born in Phelps, Wisconsin on August 21, 1952, the youngest child of Jerry and Ruth Sparks.

When he wasn’t working, David enjoyed fishing, hunting, skiing, snowmobiling, and maintaining and improving the family farm for the enjoyment of his children and grandchildren. Card games and board games were a favorite pastime; he was always drawn to a friendly game of cribbage, Oh Shoot, poker, monopoly, and many more.
