Derby Complex sets stage for World Series of Snowmobile Racing

Posted

The World Series of Snowmobile Racing is set to return to Eagle River this Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 14-15, as the World Championship Derby Complex prepares for a variety of racing for fans to enjoy throughout the weekend.

Two different sanctioning bodies, the Pro Vintage Racing (PVR) and the United States Snowmobile Association (USSA), will have different classes hit the ice, ranging from vintage to late model to ProChamp sleds. This is the final ice oval race of the season at the WCDC.

Complex CEO Tom Anderson stated that, following the Vintage and World Championship Derbies in January, along with the Pro Enduro, the track had become worn down. The hardworking track team was able to get the track back into pristine condition for the upcoming weekend.

“We put a ton of laps on between the two derbies in January, and that wore it down pretty good. Fortunately, with the cold weather, we’ve been able to build the track back up,” he said.

The USSA ProStar Series will have points races in the Champ 440 and Outlaw 600 classes. This was scheduled to be the fifth stop, but two previous races at Medford and Weyauwega were cancelled. With racing starting at 9 a.m. both days, those points races will be mixed with vintage sleds hitting the ice with classes like the Supermod 440 and many other vintage classes.

“It’s a great marriage between the USSA and PVR. They should put on an excellent show throughout the weekend,” stated Anderson.

Tickets are sold for general admission and the indoor hot seats. As of late last week, Anderson said there was still plenty of room to grab those indoor seats if interested.

After the weekend concludes, the ice oval season ends in Eagle River, and the focus will be on preparations for the Eagle River Snocross National event on Friday and Saturday, March 13-14.

Officials say the whole infield and oval will be covered in deep snow to make a track that will have a variety of stutter bumps, hairpin turns and big air jumps. Three large snow guns are producing the snow.
