Eagles snap winless streak, beat Webster in regional opener

Posted

It’s been a bumpy ride for the Northland Pines varsity softball team over the past two seasons. None of that mattered last week Thursday in the D3 regional opener at No. 8-seeded Webster/Siren, as the team picked up its first win in almost two full seasons. The No. 9-seeded Eagles smashed the streak in style with a 25-15 road win in six innings.

“Tonight was amazing,” stated Pines coach Melissa Ryan. “The girls brought energy and really applied all they have been working on this year.”

The Eagles led 3-0 after three innings, then made it 11-0 after four innings.

“Everyone showed up at the plate. We had many baserunners and scored 11 runs with two outs,” noted coach Ryan. “Jordan Cain produced a quality pitching performance, and the girls persevered even when Webster tried to come back in the fourth and fifth innings.”

Webster scored a combined 11 runs in the fourth and fifth innings, but the Eagles still held a commanding eight-run lead, 19-11. The Eagles plated a run in four consecutive innings and five in total last week to keep the pressure on for much of the night.

With the win, Northland Pines advanced to the regional semifinal to face top-seeded Spooner this  coming Tuesday, May 26 on the road. The winner of that game will play in the regional final this Thursday, May 28, against either No. 4-seeded Cumberland or No. 5-seeded Northwestern.
