Early-week prep sports recap: Feb. 2-Feb. 4

Posted

Plenty of high school sports action from area teams early this week on the ice and the court was led by two wins from the Three Lakes boys and girls basketball teams. Here are all the early-week finals between Northland Pines and Three Lakes varsity sports.

Northland Pines boys basketball- Northland Pines 40, Merrill 49

In a makeup game with the Bluejays, Northland Pines had a four-game winning streak snapped in a nine-point loss. In what was a defensive-dominated game in the first half, Pines trailed 19-18 at the break. Merrill would go on to outscore the Eagles 30-22 in the second half to pick up the win.

Northland Pines girls basketball- Northland Pines 47, Wausau East 51 The Eagles traveled down to Wausau and competed in a tight game with a Wisconsin Valley Conference school in Wausau East. Stats were not available to the News-Review before the writing of this update. The Eagles head into a GNC matchup with Rhinelander this Friday in Eagle River on a four-game skid. The Eagles lost to the Hodags 54-25 back on Dec. 19.

Northland Pines boys hockey- Tomahawk 6, Northland Pines 3

These two teams went toe-to-toe in a 6-5 game early in the season. Tuesday night’s game had a similar feel on the scoreboard for much of the night. Whenever a team scored, the other side responded within minutes to either tie the game or grab another lead. Tomahawk got the game’s first goal at 6:50 of the first, which was answered less than a minute later by Hunter Tameling to tie things at 1-1. Less than two minutes later, Tomahawk scored again and took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.

The Hatchets gained a two-goal lead early in the second and went ahead 3-1, but a late goal by Pines right in front of the net cut the deficit back to one, 3-2, by the second intermission. Senior Michael Schmidt tied things on the power play at 6:25 of the third period, before Tomahawk put on the clamps and scored three unanswered to secure the win.

Northland Pines girls hockey- Northland Pines 2, WVU 4

The Northland Pines girls hockey Co-op traveled down to Stevens Point Monday night to face the Wisconsin Valley Union. The Union scored three first-period goals and held Pines scoreless to hold a 3-0 lead. Neither team scored in the second period, as the Eagles registered 11 shots on net through the first two periods. WVU scored another goal early in the third period to make it a 4-0 game. Avery Renkes cut the lead to three at 10:48 of the third with a power-play goal, and Bella Nowak cut the deficit in half, 4-2, about four minutes later, which was the final score.

Three Lakes boys basketball- Crandon 59, Three Lakes 76

The Three Lakes boys basketball team won its fifth-straight game. Sophomore Sam Koshuta broke through with 25 points on six made 3-pointers. Levi Lurvey also had his best scoring

output of the season with 23 points. The Jays had four scorers in double figures, as Easton Lurvey and Owen Liebscher each had 10 points. Easton led the team with 14 rebounds.
