Early-week prep sports recap- Jan. 26-28

After area schools closed this past Monday due to the cold weather, prep sports action resumed Tuesday evening, as many of the area's prep sports teams were in action. Here are all the results from early-week action around the area. 

Northland Pines boys basketball- Wittenberg-Birnamwood 44, Northland Pines 51 This game had playoff implications written all over it, as the Chargers and the Eagles sit in the same sectional in the Division 3 playoff bracket. Northland Pines held a 9-5 record ahead of the matchup, and Wittenberg-Birnamwood was 12-2. Over half of the Eagles’ shots from the field came from the 3-point line, as they went 7/18 from distance in the win. The team also took 28 trips to the free-throw line and knocked down 20 of those attempts. Mylo Albrecht led Pines with 18 points and seven rebounds. Nolan Huelskamp followed with 14 points on 2-3 shooting from the 3-point line. Northland Pines travels to Tomahawk Friday night for a GNC tilt. 

Northland Pines boys hockey: Waupaca 0, Northland Pines 9 

Northland Pines put on another offensive clinic Tuesday night in Eagle River, as it picked up its seventh GNC victory in nine games. The Eagles rattled off three goals in the opening period, with tallies from Josh Graves, Hudson Gall and Jazek Jantzen. Graves would end up with a four-goal game as he had another tally in the second period, along with Bodie Bakken, to put the Eagles up 5-0 after two periods. Pines continued pouring it on in the third stanza, as it scored four more goals to close out the victory. Northland Pines went on to outshoot Waupaca 33-12. 

Three Lakes boys basketball- Goodman-Pembine 47, Three Lakes 83 Three Lakes continues to build a winning streak, as this NLC victory was the third consecutive win for the Bluejays. Three Lakes finished with an efficient night offensively, as it shot 34/72 from the field for 47% and 9/17 from the 3-point line for 53%. Sophomore Easton Lurvey finished the night with 34 points on 13/22 shooting from the floor and nine rebounds, while sophomore Sam Koshuta finished with 10 points. Senior Levi Lurvey finished with eight points. 

Three Lakes-Phelps girls basketball- Edgar 31, Three Lakes-Phelps 54 The Lady Jays opened a busy week of games with a great defensive effort against a visiting Edgar team. Holding a double-digit lead at halftime, 26-16,

Three Lakes-Phelps held the Wildcats to just 15 points in the second half while the team put up another 28. 

Sophomore Rylee Glembin assisted in the offensive efforts with a breakthrough game, as she poured in 16 points for the Jays. Sophomore Malia Szews had 12 points and 12 rebounds in the win as well, while senior Paige Brafford finished with 10 points and five rebounds. One of the best shooting nights of the season had Three Lakes-Phelps at 42% on two-point field goals and 36% from the 3-point line.
