John Younker

John Joseph Younker, aged 74, passed away at home in Eagle River, on April 19, 2025, with his wife and brother at his side.
John was born to John Arthur and Mary Alice (Sullivan) Younker on October 25, 1950, in Chicago, IL.

He grew up in Oak Lawn, IL, attended Quigley South High School, and received his Bachelor’s degree from Loyola University in 1972. He taught 38 years as a beloved 4th and 8th grade teacher with the River Trails School District in Mt. Prospect, IL. In 1976, John married the love of his life, Sue, in Elburn, IL.
As a young adult, John spent summers with Maryville Academy in Des Plaines, IL, at their camps, St. Mary’s and St. George, in Clearwater Lake. Camp ignited a passion for children, the outdoors, and serving others. He wore many hats while working 40 years at the camp, including counselor, bus driver, and camp director. It was this combination of children at the camp and in the classroom where he made many lifelong friends. He remained close to several of them, including Kyle and Brian, who became chosen family members.
He retired to the Northwoods to pursue his love for boating, snowmobiling, and ATVing. John loved to entertain friends and family. Breakfast with the boys was a Friday morning ritual. He was known for his sense of humor and talent.
John is survived by his wife, Sue; brother, Jude (Susan) Younker; and sister, Mary Helen Younker; three nieces; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A funeral mass will be at 11a.m. on Monday April 28, 2025, at St. Peter the Fisherman Church, 5001 Hwy G, Eagle River. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John’s name to Boys Town, 200 Flanagan Blvd, PO Box 6000, Boys Town, NE 68010-9988, or St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church.
