Memorial Day services will be held in communities across the Northwoods to honor and remember those who died in military service to the United States.
Veterans, area residents, government officials, and visitors are invited to attend ceremonies throughout the region. Veterans organizations in Eagle River, Three Lakes, Land O’ Lakes, Phelps, Conover, St. Germain, Rhinelander, and Presque Isle have shared details of their Memorial Day weekend programs.
The Vilas County Veterans Service Office will host its annual Memorial Day program Monday, May 25, at 11 a.m. in front of the Vilas County Courthouse. The ceremony will feature music by the Northland Pines High School band and choir, a guest speaker, a wreath-laying ceremony, and a reading of the names of fallen service members.
The Three Lakes American Legion Post 431 will begin its procession Monday, May 25, at 10 a.m. from the Three Lakes Winery on Gogebic Street. Participants will include the Color Guard, post officers, student speakers, Auxiliary members, and Lions Club members. The procession will continue to Three Lakes Cemetery, where a service will begin at 10:15 a.m. Guest speakers include Allen Sosdian, LTC, USAR (retired), Badger Girl Melanie Stauffer, and Badger Boy Ashton Boehm. Post Commander Chris Lamon will serve as emcee.
The St. Germain Lions Club will host a Memorial Day service Sunday, May 24, at 1 p.m. at St. Germain Memorial Park, located at the corner of highways 70 and 155.
Phelps’ Memorial Day service will be held Monday, May 25, at 1 p.m. at the cemetery. The program will include a roll call for the fallen and the presentation of flags to families of deceased service members. Following the service, the Phelps Historical Museum will host its annual open house, with a complimentary light lunch and refreshments served until 3 p.m. For more information, contact Steve Waier at 715-617-5552.
In addition, the Phelps Congregational United Church of Christ will present its annual Memorial Day service Sunday, May 24, at 9 a.m. A free breakfast will follow the service. The church is located at 2303 Highway 17.
A Memorial Day service will be held Monday, May 25, at 10 a.m. at Hildegard Cemetery, located at Highway K East and Cemetery Road.
A Memorial Day service will take place Monday, May 25, at 10:50 a.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery, followed by a gathering at the Veterans Center.
Memorial services in Rhinelander will be held throughout Memorial Day weekend. A service is scheduled for Saturday, May 23, at 11:30 a.m. at Union Grove Cemetery in Harshaw. On Monday, May 25, services will be held at 8:30 a.m. at Northland Memorial Park, 9 a.m. at Forest Home Cemetery, 9 a.m. at Nativity of Our Lord Cemetery, and 2:30 p.m. at Northwoods National Cemetery in Harshaw.
American Legion Post 480 will host Honor Guard cemetery services Monday, May 25, at 10 a.m. at Winchester Memorial Cemetery and approximately 11 a.m. at Presque Isle Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at approximately 11:45 a.m. at the Wilderness Veterans Memorial Flame Foundation. A luncheon at American Legion Post 480 will follow the ceremonies.
