This week’s senior spotlight returns to the gridiron, where Three Lakes-Phelps football senior Garrett Mandli opened his three-sport year. When he’s not on the football field in the fall, he plays basketball in the winter and is an all-conference long jumper in track and field in spring. When he’s not playing sports, Mandli is usually out in nature camping, fishing or hiking. His friends and family have multiple nicknames for him, and Mandli looks forward to college and majoring in civil or biomedical engineering. Here is more on the Three Lakes senior:
Do you have a nickname that your friends or family call you?
“I do have a couple nicknames; my friends and family all like to call me Gary, Garebear or just Gare. I don’t know where they came from, but they all just stuck.”
Do you participate in any other sports besides football?
Do you have a personal goal for the season this year?
“My personal goal for this season is to go out and do my best. I did not play much my first couple of years, so this year, I’m going all out.”
What other hobbies do you have outside of sports?
“When I’m outside of sports, I like to go camping, fishing, hiking, or basically anything else out in nature.”
Favorite vacation spot you’ve been to?
“My favorite vacation spot is the Florida Keys. I visited with my family last spring break, and going out and seeing a place so vastly different from northern Wisconsin was really cool. The views of the coral reefs and ocean were great.”
Do you have a pre-game/meet ritual that helps you?
“Before every football game, I like to play a game of Retro Bowl on my phone, and then put my earbuds in and listen to some music to get into the right headspace.”
Do you have any plans for after high school? College?
