Nine Rebel Jays earn All-Conference honors

Posted

Following a record-breaking season that ended with three medal winners at the WIAA Division 3 Individual State Tournament, nine members of the Laona-Wabeno-Three Lakes varsity wrestling team have earned all-conference honors through voting from coaches in the Northern Lakes Conference. Reegan Roy, Ryker Schingeck, Brody Hoffman, Max Clark and Cameron Tilton were selected from the boys roster, while Kyra Beaber, Idalynn Vladik, Ali Hanson, and Sommer Ridgeway represented the girls.

The selections were released last week and included some additional team acknowledgement as Roy and Schingeck were selected as male wrestlers of the year. On the girls’ side, Beaber took home the female wrestler of the year award. The conference no longer announces a coach of the year award, but head coaches Seth Senter and Colin Schubert, who were back-to-back winners in 2023 and 2024, were satisfied with the overall recognition of their team.

“Everything came together for the program this season,” Senter said after the announcements. “Colin and I have built this team through a group of hard-workers and fierce competitors. They are all looking for ways to win and another hill to climb in their careers, and we just couldn’t be prouder of each of these kids. We also have plenty of talent beyond this group who are ready to take that next step up.”

Roy (126 lbs.) and Schingeck (120 lbs.) led the team statistically this season posting records of 55-4 and 56-2, and were each a match away from a state championship bout in their respective weight classes two weeks ago. It was the third consecutive trip to Madison for Roy and the second for Schingeck.

Clark and Hoffman each made their state tournament debut on records of 40-6 and 43-5 in the 113-pound and 190-pound weight brackets. This fearsome foursome of high school wrestlers regularly had top placements in major tournaments this year, with Schingeck topping his bracket eight times.

The wrestler of the year award was the second in a row for Roy who was equally honored last season after winning a state championship at 106 pounds. The change in weight this season did not change his impact on the sport as Roy has been in the Wisconsin Grappler top-five ranking all year, and was a number one seed in the state championship tournament.

Hoffman and Clark join Schingeck and Roy as back-to-back all-conference honorees. This is the second selection for Hoffman and the third for Clark.

Rounding out the selection process is Tilton, who earned his way to the all-conference team through a match record of 36-13, including five victories in a January scramble in Elcho where he finished first in his weight class.

The girls squad was led by Beaber, who not only made the all-conference team, but was honored as female wrestler of the year. She is joined by all-conference teammates Allison Hansen, Idalynn Vladik, and by Three Lakes High School junior, Sommer Ridgeway. Beaber ended the year with a match record of 28-7 and earned a spot, along with Vladik, to compete in the WIAA D3 Section Tournament last month. Collectively, the girls’ team generated 65 match wins during the season.

“It’s nice to see the fact that coaches in our conference acknowledge the efforts of our team,” Senter added. “Colin and I also hope our wrestlers understand the weight of their accomplishments this season. They have all contributed to adding another brick to the foundation of our program. And this is not the end because we are always looking for new methods to reach even higher levels.”

Senter also noted appreciation by himself and Schubert of the contributions made by the assistant coaches John Fink and Dan Moravec.

“The kids really love these guys, and they played a major part in having nine wrestlers on the all-conference team. The parents of our athletes should also be honored as they manage an important role keeping the kids on track with their responsibilities and providing great general support at each event. Overall, this is a great program with some real great people.”
