Patricia K. Spurgeon completed her earthly life and entered the arms of her loving Savior on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2025.
Patty was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on Wednesday, February 19, 1947. Her parents David and Thelma Hughes raised three children, Davey, Patty, and Linda in a home surrounded by love, faith, grit and tenacity.
Patty loved to tell stories from her past and often spoke of many fond memories from her childhood. David, Patty’s father, raised his children from a wheelchair due to an injury in WWII, and it was from her father that she drew the strength she needed to overcome and deal with the physical limitations that changed her life after contracting polio as a young child. Just like her father, Patty was a survivor.
Pat married the love of her life, Gale Spurgeon, on June 19, 1965. She was a faithful wife that held down the fort during Gale’s military career in the Air Force. Her matter of fact, but fun-loving personality made her the perfect “boy mom” to her three sons, Robert James, Timothy Wayne, and Daniel Lavere.
Her boys have many stories about their mother’s pithy sayings, her drawn out lectures when they crossed the line, and the time she spent playing board games with them. Patty loved being a wife and a mom.
Pat had a heart to serve others and was extremely generous. She was a foster mom and a babysitter to many little ones. Until the day she passed away, she kept an abundance of toys at her house for any little visitors. Many children knew her as Mrs. Spurgeon, their Sunday School teacher. For decades, she spent Saturday evening preparing for the Sunday School lessons she would teach the next morning.
Her grandkids have a wealth of memories of time with their Nanna. She poured her heart and her prayers into her grandkids. Pat loved little children.
Pat spent countless hours crocheting - making blankets and gifts for others through her beloved craft. More than likely, if you knew Pat, you had an afghan with her name on it. Patty often would incorporate her favorite color – purple – into her creations. She taught many young people, including her son Rob and his girls how to crochet. Pat loved blessing people with her created gifts.
Pat talked often about her love for God and His Word. Pat had placed her faith in Christ, and spoke with great excitement about the day she would see Jesus face to face. Her chronic pain from post-polio syndrome made her think and talk about Heaven a lot. On Christmas Eve her pain on earth ended and she became completely pain free and at peace she saw Jesus face to face. We rest in the assurance that at this very moment, Pat is in Heaven with the Lord and is being reunited with those loved ones who had gone to Heaven before her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, David and Thelma Hughes; her brother, Davey Hughes; her son, Daniel; her granddaughter, Allyssa Hope; and her great-granddaughter, Peyton.
She is survived by her husband of almost 61 years, Gale Spurgeon. Her oldest son, Robert (Martie), and their children, Rachel Spurgeon, Abigail (Andrew) Siqueria, James (Hannah) Spurgeon, Zechariah (Emily) Spurgeon, and Anna Spurgeon. Her middle son, Timothy (MarDee) Spurgeon, and their children, Cody, Paige, Laura Marie, and Christopher. Her youngest son’s namesake, Daniel L (Little Dan) Spurgeon.
She is also survived by six great-grandchildren, Maelle, Wyatt, Lucca, Arianna, Tatum, and Olivia.
Funeral Services will be held at Gaffney-Busha Funeral Home. The family will be receiving guests during the Visitation on Monday, January 5, 2026, at 1:00PM. The funeral follows at 2:00 PM.
