The School District of Phelps honored veterans at its Veterans Day Program on Friday, Nov. 8, directed by Jace Gwynn in the school’s small gym.
The event welcomed community members and local veterans, with Veterans of Foreign War-Amvets Post 8400 presenting the colors.
Gwynn opened the program with a tribute to Henry Gunther, the last American soldier to die in World War I, and thanked the 8th-grade class for their help in organizing the event.
“His sacrifice was one among millions who have answered the call to serve,” said Gwynn.
The program featured student musical and choral performances directed by music teacher Lisa Duquaine, along with student readings and speeches.
Retired Master Sergeant Darren Doss, United States Marine Corps, served as the guest speaker, sharing, “Many of us volunteer to serve because of a deep sense of duty to protect our families, our communities, and our country. We are driven by a commitment to something larger than ourselves — the protection of values and freedoms that have shaped this nation.”
He encouraged students to serve in their own ways through studies and community service, and by showing respect and gratitude.
Coffee and baked goods were served before the program, and a lunch with students followed.
