Phelps School students explore Great Lakes Aquarium

Posted

Phelps School 2nd through 5th grade students, under the direction of Pam Klessig and Abby Susor, visited the Great Lakes Aquarium in Duluth, Minn.

“This adventure allowed the students to share in a plethora of experiences. Obviously, all of the exhibits pertained to water and the relationship with which it extends, not only to the Great Lakes but throughout the entire world, making those global connections,” stated Klessig.

There were over one dozen habitats that allowed the students to explore.

One of the favorite exhibits, according to Mrs. Klessig, was the Oceans Alive, where the students could observe an underwater cave and a giant Pacific octopus.

Other ocean animal favorites were the seahorses, the sea dragons, and the lionfish.

The group also toured Otter Cove, Raptor Ridge, Amazing Amazon, Freshwater Forest and an exhibit where the students could pet live sturgeons.

The tour ended with a class where the students learned how rocks are formed and how to identify them, including samples from Lake Superior. The Vine Family Fund Grant covered all transportation costs.
