Pines boys beat Lakeland, lose to Mosinee in GNC action

Posted

The Northland Pines boys basketball team split a pair of Great Northern Conference (GNC) games last week, beating Lakeland 68-60 and losing to Mosinee 65-45.

The Eagles hosted Lakeland last Tuesday and picked up their third GNC victory of the season. Pines fell behind early, but regained a 37-31 lead at the intermission.

“I was pleased that we stayed the course in the first half after being down 12 to start the game,” said Pines coach Terry Klemett. “They came out on fire and we were able to run our systems on both sides of the ball and get a lead into the break. Jack Albrecht and Ethan Miller had a nice first half and really attacked the basket.”

The game remained close most of the second half, as Pines outscored Lakeland 31-29 to take the victory.

“The second half we struggled a bit more,” said Klemett. “We were getting fatigued, but we made some plays down the stretch to secure the win. This was a very good bounce back win and I am very proud of our team.”

The Eagles had four players score in double figures, led by Ethan Miller with 18, Jack Albrecht with 15, Tyler Vojta with 14 and Mylo Albrecht with 10. Albrecht also had 10 rebounds, while Miller grabbed nine. Jack dished out six assists.
Pines won the game inside, getting 36 points in the point and connecting on 12 second-chance points aided by 20 offensive rebounds.

Mosinee loss

The Eagles traveled to Mosinee on Friday and fell to the Indians by 20 points after Mosinee built a commanding 33-18 halftime lead. Mosinee came into the game undefeated in the GNC.

“We didn’t play well at all on either side of the ball,” said Klemett. “Mosinee just outplayed us in every category and we had no answer for them. It was just an off night for our group against a really good team at their place and sometimes that happens.”

Mosinee shot 49% from the floor compared to 30% for Pines and got 36 points in the paint compared to 20 for Pines.

The Eagles had just one player score in double figures, Ryan Rydeski with 10 points. He also had nine rebounds. Oliver Weberg contributed eight points, and Aiden Minx, Jack Albrecht and Miller added six apiece. Miller grabbed five rebounds. Albrecht, the Eagles leading scorer this season, was held to four points.

The Eagles, 7-4 overall and 3-2 in the GNC, were scheduled to host Medford on Tuesday of this week and will host Antigo this Friday, Jan. 16, in a pair of GNC games. Both games start at 7:15 p.m.

“We’re looking forward to preparing for Medford and trying to come away with a win on Tuesday,” said Klemett.

Next Tuesday, Jan. 20, the Eagles will travel to Wausau East for a nonconference game starting at 7:15 p.m.
