It was a trip down south as the Northland Pines varsity golf team played on a course for the first time in a two-day tournament at the Wild Rock Golf Club in Wisconsin Dells last Thursday and Friday.
With the weather heading into the area last Friday, Northland Pines completed just one round, which was good practice for the team. The team was sent back to Eagle River during the middle of the second round due to severe weather possibilities.
The Eagles scored 351 as a team in the opening round on April 16, which put them in seventh out of 12 teams.
“All in all, it was a very successful event for the team. Trips like this are a great way to bond as a team as well as providing practice outside on grass for the first time this year,” said Head Coach Jeff Libby. “The Invitational at Wild Rock was a jolting dose of reality for most of the players. The course plays longer and more difficult than the majority of the courses we play in conference.”
Junior Sam Shrock fired a first-round 76 for the Eagles, which had him in second place as he was just a few holes into his second round.
“Sam felt as though he wasn’t playing great, but he was scoring well. He was decent from tee to green but was pretty darn sharp in scrambling,” stated Libby. “When we were forced to leave the meet due to weather, he was in second place overall as an individual and was looking to close out strong.”
Junior Collin Reynolds shot a 12-over 89 in the opening round of the first meet of the year.
Libby said the junior was starting to get in a groove and showed a lot of potential in his first time out this year as a full-time varsity player.
“Collin did a lot of really good things throughout the two days and felt like he was getting into the groove again,” explained Libby.
Junior Eli Repenshek finished the first day with a 94, junior Easton Otto carded a 92 and junior Cadmen Libby finished with a 100.
The Eagles return to the links to open up the Great Northern Conference meets at Merrill Golf course this Friday, April 24, at 2 p.m. Pines will then travel to Inshalla Country Club next Tuesday for another conference meet at 3 p.m.
