The Northwoods American Legion 19u baseball team moved to 8-0 on the summer season, after an 8-3 home win over Minocqua Post 89 on July 16 in a game where Northwoods pitching threw six scoreless innings in the win.
Three runs right out of the gate gave the home team a quick advantage over the visiting 89ers. The first four batters got on base, with Griffin Beyer, Brody Hoeft and Jonathan Miller hitting singles. Miller drove in Beyer with his base knock, while Hoeft drove in Jonah Will with his single and later scored.
Miller got the start on the mound and dominated from the opening pitch. He went four innings before Beyer pitched the final three innings to close the game.
“Our pitching was dominant again,” said Northwoods manager Dustin Hoeft.
The Hoeft brothers (Brody and Landon) each scored during the bottom of the third inning after back-to-back singles with Davis Beyer collecting a RBI.
Hoeft (Brody) continued his hot streak at the dish in the fourth, hitting his sixth home run of the summer legion season, which was a two-run shot to make it 8-0 after four innings. He led the offense with three hits on the evening. Beyer (Griffin) reached base three times, including two singles and an error. Miller also had two hits throughout the night.
“I’m very happy with the kids’ approach at the plate this year,” Hoeft stated. “Being very patient and attacking the pitches that they like.”
Minocqua scored once in the sixth against Beyer and twice in the seventh to get on the board late.
The team had a makeup game against Ironwood this past Monday, which acted like a scrimmage, according to Hoeft. The team now moves on to the regional playoffs that start this Thursday, July 24. Northwoods will open regional play against Antigo at 2 p.m. All games will be played at the Minocqua Park Complex in Minocqua. If the team were to win that game, they would move on to play the winner of Merrill or Rhinelander Friday, July 25, at 5 p.m. A loss would put them in the 11 a.m. game on Friday morning against either Medford or Minocqua. Games go through Saturday with a regional championship game set for Sunday at 10 a.m., with a second game at 1 p.m. if a team needs to beat its opponent twice to advance.
