The new Plum Lake Community Center project is on schedule with completion expected in late September.
If all goes well, town Chair Jackey Postuchow said the scheduled date for the ribbon cutting ceremony will be Oct. 3, although more details will be released closer to the project’s end.
Postuchow said the demolition of the existing town hall building is scheduled to begin this week. Prior to demolition, fire and EMS volunteers had a unique opportunity to use the building for training. Saturday morning, staff was able to practice important lifesaving techniques such as forced entry and roof venting operations.
“Electors gave permission to use the building one last time for training purposes,” said Postuchow, who is also a volunteer firefighter and EMS member. “A lot of benefit is going to come from the building; kind of a last hurrah. It’s very valuable because we can’t often train on roofs.”
In the meantime, town offices have been successfully relocated to their new location at 2821 Highway 155 within the EMS building. The address has changed, but the phone number is the same, 715-542-4531.
Visitors are asked to not park in front of the garage doors and should instead use the designated parking near the sign and along the west side of the building and use the front entrance.
The town is fundraising for new furniture, art and equipment to be used once the center is completed. A letter was posted to the town website (plumlakewi.gov/news) earlier this spring asking the public for support.
While the updated public meeting rooms, new town offices, a tele-med room, free 24/7 internet access space, and public restrooms are covered by the $4.25 million grant received from the state, it does not cover things like furnishings, artwork and other decorative or functional elements.
“Just like building a new home it doesn’t come with new appliances; you bring your old,” Postuchow said. “Our hope is our decor can match the same eloquence as the new building.”
She noted there has already been some “amazing” support from groups and individuals in the community.
“We do have naming rights opportunities. A group or individual may out fit a room and have the room named as they would like,” she added.
