Sister Edith Gottsacker, OSF

(1931-2026)

Sister Edith Gottsacker was born January 2, 1931, in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. From an early age, she loved history and knew she wanted to become a teacher. After attending Briar Cliff College, she entered the Sisters of St. Francis on August 25, 1951, and was received as Sister Hugh.

Sister Edith dedicated her life to education, teaching at schools in Dubuque, Bancroft and Worthington before returning to Briar Cliff University, where she taught history for nearly four decades. She earned a master's degree in American History from The Catholic University of America and a Ph.D. in European, Russian and Chinese History from Georgetown University. She later became a full professor and chair of the History and Political Science Department.

A lifelong learner and avid reader, Sister Edith shared her enthusiasm for history with generations of students and was honored throughout her teaching career. After retiring in 2002, she enjoyed volunteering and being part of the community in Eagle River, Wisconsin, where she especially cherished the beauty of nature.

Sister Edith found great joy in prayer, classical music, family and friends, and her Franciscan Community. Reflecting on her life, she said, "I chose my path and it led me to God. I've had a good life. A blessed life"

Memorials may be given to the Sisters of St. Francis, Dubuque, IA.
