Michigan Tech redshirt sophomore Gabe Smith, a 2023 Northland Pines graduate, continues to make strides in the Michigan Tech Men’s basketball program, as he is not only a big part of the first-ever NCAA DII Tournament Midwest Regional Championship, but he was also nominated earlier this month to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference (GLIAC) all-defensive team.
The No. 16 nationally ranked Huskies won their first Midwest Regional Title on March 18 and will move to their first Elite Eight appearance this week. The sixth-seeded Huskies will take on the third-seeded Gannon this Wednesday.
Smith made his presence known in the Regional Title game, posting 11 points on five made field goals in 34 minutes. He also had a game-leading 11 rebounds for his eighth-career double-double.
This was his first time in his career being tabbed to the all-defensive team in the conference. After starting 11 games in 32 appearances last season, Smith started all 30 games in the regular season this year for the Huskies. He finished fifth in the GLIAC in total rebounds with 193, and his 6.4 rebounding average was eighth-best in the league for 2025-26.
He was a ball hawk defensively this season and led the team with 56 steals and averaged 1.87 takeaways per game, both of which were third-best in the conference.
