Softball tournament returns to Phelps next weekend

The Phelps Youth Rec is again hosting its 46th annual men’s softball tournament next Friday through Sunday, July 25-27, at Wavering Park in Phelps.

Eight teams are currently registered for the event this year as of July 17, with organizers hopeful that the maximum number of teams (12) will be in the event. Things kick off on Friday night with game times still to be determined, according to Tournament Director Mike Duquaine. Saturday and Sunday games will begin at 8 a.m. again this year and go throughout the day.

The weekend will be filled with softball action with a double-elimination format, along with a concessions stand serving brats, burgers, hot dogs, pulled pork and plenty of other treats for participants or spectators to enjoy.

Sobeks Resort took first place in last year’s tournament.

Prize money is based on a 12-team field, with  the winners getting $1,200, second place getting  $700, third getting $350 and fourth receiving  $150. All teams get a team trophy.

All proceeds from the tournament will go towards helping youth sports and other programs in Phelps like scholarships, music programs, field trips, parties, community events and much more.

This story will be updated with more specific game times when available.
