Spring elections will be here before you know it, and the races are taking shape ahead of the Spring Primary which occurs next Tuesday, Feb. 17.
Locally, the only town that will see a primary is Three Lakes, where five candidates are vying for two open seats in the Spring Election. The four that win the most votes in the primary will be placed on the April 7 ballot.
Incumbents Ella Baltus and Ed Cottingham are looking to retain their seats against challengers Tyler Kelley, Kevin Meyer and Leah Rehberg (see related story on Three Lakes page).
Candidates who filed paperwork to be included on the April 7 ballots in county, town and school races are included below.
The Vilas County Board of Supervisors will have one contested race in the Spring Election, for District 9, Town of Arbor Vitae, Ward 1 and Lac du Flambeau, Wards 6 and 7. Incumbent Robert Hanson is being challenged by Stephen J. Bunda.
The board also will have a few seats vacant due to no candidates launching bids after current members filed non-candidacy. Jacob Postuchow, who served District 1, Town of Land O’ Lakes, Ward 1 and Town of Plum Lake, Ward 1; Arleen Harsvick, District 7, Town of Arbor Vitae, Wards 5 and 6; and Arthur Kunde, District 14, Town of Conover, Ward 1 and Town of Lincoln, Ward 1, all filed for non-candidacy. District 1 and 14 both have nobody running to fill the open seats, while Michael Rayala will run unopposed for the District 7 seat.
Others running unopposed include: Richard Logan, District 2, Town of Presque Isle, Ward 1 and Town of Winchester, Ward 1; Thomas Petrusky, District 3, Town of Boulder Junction, Ward 1 and Town of Lac du Flambeau, Ward 1 and Town of Manitowish Waters, Ward 1; Michael MacKenzie, District 4, Town of Boulder Junction, Ward 2 and Town of Presque Isle, Ward 2; Ann Konopacky, District 5, Town of Arbor Vitae, Wards 2 and 7; Leah Trojan, District 6, Town of Arbor Vitae, Wards 3 and 4; Tom Maulson, District 8, Town of Lac du Flambeau, Wards 2 and 3; Joseph Wildcat, Sr., District 10, Town of Lac du Flambeau, Wards 4 and 5; Marvin A. Seats with no opposition in our readership area for the Oneida County Board of Supervisors include: Robert Briggs, District 7, Enterprise, Schoepke, Monico, Piehl, Three Lakes Ward 2; Daniel Hess, District 10, Newbold Wards 3 and 4; Collette Sorgel, District 13, Three Lakes Wards 1 and 3; Scott Holewinski, District 14, Sugar Camp Wards 1 and 2; and Lenore Lopez, District 15, Newbold Wards 1 and 2 and Lake Tomahawk Ward 1.
Cloverland: Incumbents running unopposed include Mildred Ritzer, supervisor 3, and Joseph Spitz, supervisor 4.
Conover: Current supervisors 3 and 4, Bill Hogenmiller and Sean Lewis, respectively, are unopposed.
Lincoln: Incumbent supervisors Ken Fox and Bruce Richter are running uncontested.
Phelps: Supervisor Jeremy Ryan is running to retain his seat, while Dave Selby filed for non-candidacy in December. Mary Ann Holcomb (known as “Mak”), has filed the necessary paperwork to run as a write-in candidate for a seat on the town board.
St. Germain: Patric Niggemeier, incumbent, submitted candidacy paperwork for Supervisor 1 and is running uncontested. The Town of St. Germain did not receive candidacy paperwork for Supervisor 2 prior to the deadline to be included on the ballot for the upcoming election in April. Brian Cooper, incumbent, had initially filed non-candidacy paperwork for the Supervisor 2 position, but with the lack of candidates, Cooper has now submitted candidacy paperwork to be a write-in candidate for the seat.
Northland Pines School Board: All uncontested, Incumbent Chris Petreikis for Area A, City of Eagle River, Towns of Cloverland, Lincoln, Washington; Jennifer Payne for Area B, Town of Conover; and Chelsea Romaker for Area E, Towns of St. Germain and Newbold.
Three Lakes School District: Board member Stacey Klein is running unopposed.
Phelps School District: Clerk Kim Johnson and board member Rick Brown will appear on the ballot uncontested.
Justice Rebecca Bradley is not seeking another 10-year term, opening up her seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Wisconsin Court of Appeals Judge Maria Lazar and Wisconsin Court of Appeals Judge Chris Taylor are running in the April 7 election for the open seat.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation Division of Motor Vehicles reminds citizens to check and be sure that they have the proper identification needed to vote in the Spring Primary Election.
Wisconsin driver licenses or IDs are the most common form of identification used for voting purposes. A federally compliant Real ID card is not required to show at the polls.
The Wisconsin Elections Commission notes other forms of identification are valid for voting, such as military or student ID cards. To see if a card meets the requirements, visit the Wisconsin Elections Commission website.
