The Presque Isle Fire Department, with aid from the Winchester and Manitowish Waters fire departments and Northwoods EMS District, responded to a reported structure fire at a residence located on South Bayview Road in Presque Isle on March 23.
According to the press release, the call was received just after 1:30 p.m. Upon arrival, crews observed heavy smoke coming from the garage and exterior side of the home. The homeowner had safely exited the residence prior to arrival and confirmed that all occupants were accounted for.
“Firefighters initiated an aggressive fire attack, quickly working to contain the fire and prevent further extension into the living areas of the home,” the release said.
The fire was brought under control within approximately 30 minutes and fully extinguished in just over one hour. Fire crews remained on scene to conduct overhaul operations and ensure the fire was completely extinguished.
The residence sustained fire damage to the exterior, garage, and attic areas, along with water and smoke damage to portions of the interior. No injuries to civilians or firefighters were reported.
The fire is believed to have been accidental in nature, likely caused by improperly discarded fireplace ashes.
Other agencies assisted on scene through the MABAS mutual aid system were Boulder Junction, Arbor Vitae and Marenisco fire departments and Vilas County Sheriff’s Department, whose support was instrumental in the successful outcome of this incident. The Presque Isle Fire Department also recognized and thanked Vilas County Dispatch for its professionalism and coordination throughout the incident.
“Due to the damage, the residence is currently not habitable. The homeowner is working with their insurance provider and restoration services,” the release stated.
The Presque Isle Fire Department took a moment to remind residents that fireplace ashes can remain hot for extended periods of time and should always be placed in a metal container, stored well away from structures, and monitored until completely cooled.
