Students explore the buzz about bees and honey

Posted

During a recent visit to Land O’ Lakes Elementary School, students enthusiastically engaged in an educational event focused on bees and honey.

The program featured four interactive stations designed to enrich their understanding of the vital role bees play in our ecosystem.

At the first station, students watched a film about the life cycle of bees. They then prepared oatmeal cookies sweetened with honey at the second station, followed by a demonstration by Ms. Anastasia Cokinos at the third station on pollen transfer using powdered gelatin and cotton swabs.

The event culminated with the fourth station, where Ms. Ivy Lapp guided students in harvesting honey from beehive frames.

After removing the wax, the frames were placed in a honey extractor, where students took turns spinning the handle and watching the honey flow. Ms. Lapp also explained that the wax can be used to make lip balm and candles.

The event highlighted the importance of bees and their contributions, leaving students with a deeper appreciation for these essential pollinators.
