Together we can stop food waste

Dear Editor:

My name is Seren S., and I am a third-grader at Eagle River Elementary School.

Did you know there is a National Prevent Food Waste Day on April 29? I am telling you this because I want everyone to know about food waste and the problems it causes.

Farmers throw out so many fruits and vegetables because they are misshapen or bruised, when they are still edible! Then, people who work at grocery stores do the same! People often buy too much food and use only a little of it! Plus, the food they do use is wasted because they don’t eat everything on their plates.

The food could be used in compost or given to the hungry, but it is thrown out, causing hunger and waste. Here are some things you can do to prevent food waste:

  1. Make a shopping list so you do not overshop.
  2. Eat all the food on your plate.
  3. Bruised or misshapen foods can go to the hungry or in the compost.
  4. Try to eat foods that are about to expire so they do not need to be thrown out.
  5. If you have leftovers, keep them for another time.
  6. If you end up with misshapen or bruised foods, you can still eat them, or just buy them at the farmer’s market, so farmers don’t have to toss them.

Thank you! Remember: To fix the world, spread the message!

We CAN stop food waste!

Thank you,

Seren Spier-Olsen
