The top of the lineup drove the offense as the first five hitters combined for 10 of the 11 hits in a 7-3 road victory for the Minocqua Wood Ducks over the Rhinelander River Monsters July 9 in Rhinelander.
It was a bounce-back from a home loss the team took over the Fourth of July weekend against Wisconsin Rapids.
Landon Hoeft, Jonathan Miller, Peter Aerts, Austin Samanske and Danny Gahler each had two hits apiece.
Minocqua got on the board in the top of the first with a pair of runs. Miller hit a one-out double and was later driven in by Gahler after a single into center field. He went 2-5 on the day with two RBI. Samanske made it 2-0 after he scored on an error before a popout ended the inning.
Aerts started the top of the third with a walk and went on to steal second. Samanske singled in the next at-bat to score Aerts and make it 3-0. Another three runs in the top of the fourth made it 6-0 before Rhinelander got two in the board in the bottom of the fourth to get it to 6-2.
Bradley Stephens got the start for Minocqua and got through three and one-third innings before Hoeft came in for relief. Stephens surrendered six hits and the two runs while striking out four.
Hoeft got out of the fourth and pitched the remaining five innings to pick up the win. He allowed just four hits, one run and struck out four hitters.
Minocqua scored its final run of the night in the top of the fifth as Hoeft grabbed an RBI on a two-out double.
The Wood Ducks improved to 6-4 on the season and sit in a pretty good position for the playoffs.
