The Town of Sugar Camp recently received two $500 donations from the Sugar Camp Open and the Sugar Camp Safety Committee to support the completion of the Sugar Camp Veterans Memorial.
The funds will be used to purchase the final sign, marking the last step in bringing the project to completion.
Katie Bauknecht, town chair, said the Sugar Camp Open is a small, local fishing tournament that has been running for the past 19 years. Held annually on the first Saturday of Labor Day weekend, the tournament is limited to just 25 boats, creating a friendly and community-centered atmosphere.
“Each year, proceeds from the event are donated to help local veterans in need — a long-standing tradition that reflects the group’s deep appreciation for those who have served,” Bauknecht said.
The Sugar Camp Safety Committee has been active for 13 years and was originally started by a group of 12 friends who began meeting once a week for camaraderie and conversation.
“The idea was simple but meaningful — each person would contribute a couple of dollars every week, and the money would go toward helping local individuals facing health challenges or to community organizations such as Feed Our Rural Kids (FORK),” she added. “Over time, the Safety Committee has grown into a cherished weekly gathering held every Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Pitlik’s, featuring two-for-one drinks and a strong spirit of giving back to the community.”
Customized bricks are available for placement at the veterans memorial. Bricks are 4-inches by 8-inches and cost $100 each. They can be personalized with veteran’s name, service branch and a short message as space allows. For more details or to order, visit donationbricks.com/sugarcamp.
