A new commitment to direct communication from your city government

The City of Eagle River is launching a new newspaper column designed to provide residents with accurate, transparent, and timely information about the work of their local government.

In recent months, city officials have observed an increase in disinformation, misunderstandings, and incomplete information circulating through social media, public meetings, and letters to the editor. Healthy public discussion and differing viewpoints are an important part of local government, and residents should always feel comfortable asking questions and expressing opinions. However, decisions are best made when everyone is working from the same set of facts.

This weekly column is intended to serve as a direct source of information from the city itself.

Our goal is not to silence criticism, discourage debate, or persuade residents to agree with every decision made by elected officials or staff. Rather, our objective is to ensure that the public has access to accurate information regarding city projects, finances, policies, ordinances, development proposals, public services, and decisions made by the city council, commissions, and committees.

Local government can be complicated. State statutes, budget requirements, zoning regulations, infrastructure planning, and public safety responsibilities often involve legal and technical requirements that are not always visible to the public.

As information is shared and reshared online, important context can sometimes be lost. A statement that may sound concerning in a social media post may have a much different meaning when viewed within the full legal, financial, or procedural framework.

Through this column, residents can expect straightforward explanations of topics currently facing the community. We will explain what actions are being considered, what decisions have been made, why those decisions were made, and what legal or financial factors influenced them. We will also address common questions that city staff and elected officials receive from residents.

Transparency is one of the most important responsibilities of local government.

The city already provides public access to agendas, meeting packets, minutes, ordinances, resolutions, and other public records on our website (eagleriverwi.gov). This column will complement those resources by helping explain complex issues in a more accessible format.

We recognize that trust is earned through openness, consistency, and accountability. That means providing information even when issues are controversial or opinions differ. It also means acknowledging when corrections are necessary and ensuring that facts are presented clearly and accurately.

Residents are encouraged to continue attending public meetings, reviewing official city documents, and engaging with their elected representatives.

An informed community is a stronger community, and productive discussions are most effective when they are grounded in verified information. Please do not rely on social media for complete and accurate information.
