The Eagle River Babe Ruth Baseball Prep League team (13u) went perfect in a trio of home games last week, winning all three contests.
They started the week with a doubleheader sweep against Phillips on June 30 by scores of 7-3 in 5 innings and 17-2. The team also had a come-from-behind victory July 2 against the Lakeland 2 team.
The Eagles scored seven runs on only three hits in game one of the double-dip against Phillips, thanks to timely hitting and aggressive base running.
A big hit in the opener was a base-loaded triple by Cam Passow that gave them a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
Drew Margelofsky shared pitching duties with Hunter and Gage Posielenzny.
The Eagles then scored one run in the first inning of game two, but they were just warming up. Eight more crossed the plate in the second inning, two in the third and six in the fourth. The Eagles had 17 hits in the game.
Axel Stiemke was the starting pitcher. He struck out four of the six batters he faced and went 3-3 at the plate with two doubles.
The Eagles’ third and final game last week was against Lakeland 2 (Team Wireless) at home July 2. They fell behind 7-1 after two innings before fighting back to win 13-10.
Coach Brian Margelofsky said patience at the plate in the third inning helped spark the comeback.
“Lakeland’s pitcher walked the bases loaded and walked a run in later in the third inning,” noted Margelofsky. “Timely hits by Hank Hoelzel and Weberg helped us tally four more runs (five total in the inning).”
The fifth inning was a repeat of the third with five runs scored, but this time it was Hoelzel and Mason Meier who produced the runs.
While the bats were fueling the comeback, reliever Axel Stiemke shut down the Lakeland bats.
He pitched the third, fourth and fifth innings, striking out seven of the nine hitters he faced with no walks and no hits.
“I wasn’t expecting Axel to dominate the way he did. He put on a real clinic,” stated Margelofsky.
The team looked to continue momentum this past Monday as it hosted Lakeland 1 at Oldenburg Park before heading to Rhinelander tomorrow, July 9, for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
The Eagle River Babe Ruth Senior League team did not play a game this past week.
They were scheduled to play Park Falls today, July 8, and were also expected to play at Rhinelander Monday, July 14, Phillips on Tuesday, July 15, and Tomahawk Friday, July 18.
