Bluejays take small group of athletes to Stevens Point meet

Posted

The Three Lakes-Phelps varsity track teams had just one meet this week, which was a makeup meet at UW-Stevens Point that was originally scheduled for April 2. The team had a limited number of athletes compete at the event due to other school obligations.  With that, the boys’ team scored four points in the field of 21 teams. The girls did not

score at the event, with just five athletes competing.

“It was pretty low-key since we were missing so many. Zach Weavers was probably the biggest story of the night. He threw a 7" PR after PRing on Saturday. He's definitely moving in a good direction early in the season,” Head Coach Nate Koch said about the Tuesday meet. For the boys, freshman Charlie Welsh competed in one of the 11 heats in the 400-meter dash and ran against 59 other runners. Welsh finished in a large group of athletes at 1:03, taking a time of 1:03.89. That was good for a 38th-place finish out of 60. Sophomore Dominick Larnard-Hegman also competed in the 400, finishing with a time of 1:22.75. He was also the lone Bluejay to run the 800-meter, where he ran a time of 3:15.48.

Freshman Zach Dehaan was one of four Three Lakes-Phelps runners to compete in short-distance sprints. He ran the 60-meter hurdle prelims and took 19th with a personal-best time of 12.60. Sophomores Cameron LaGree and Bently Bills and freshman Peter Cruckson also competed in the 60-meter dash prelims. LaGree finished at 8.21, Cruckson took a time of 8.57 and Bills finished in just over nine seconds at 9.06.

In field events, sophomore Masen Schoeneck cracked the top 10 in the high jump by clearing 5’6”. If Schoeneck had been able to clear 5’8”, that would have put him in a tie for fifth. Teammate and freshman Henry Weavers also cleared 5’6” to take 12th. He beat his personal best by six inches.

Dehaan and freshman Blake Joslin also competed in the long jump and triple jump. Dehaan had a leap of 13’3” in the long jump, while Joslin hit the 29’2” mark in the triple jump. Senior Ashton Boehm was another Bluejay to finish inside the top 10, where he finished tied for ninth in the pole vault by clearing 10’. Weavers competed at a high level in the shot put with a fifth-place finish with a throw of 45’7”.

The girls had just five athletes make the trip in this one, with two running in track events and four taking their turn in the pole vault and shot put.

Vivianna and Isabella Cruckson competed in a stacked field of the 60-meter hurdles, taking 19th and 25th in the prelims, respectively.

Vivianna was the only Bluejay in a 15-athlete field in the pole vault. She was in a group of five girls to clear six feet.

The Cruckson sisters both PR’d in their events.

Brooke Neumann, Anjelica Zirbes and Somerr Ridgeway all took throws for Three Lakes in the shot put. Neumann took 34th with a throw distance of 25’5”. Zirbes hit the 23’10” mark and Ridgeway made a throw of 22’ 8.5”.

The team will be back in action this Tuesday, April 14, at Rhinelander High School. Events were scheduled to start at 4:15 p.m. Three Lakes-Phelps will also travel to Marathon on Friday, April 17, at 4:30 p.m.
