Busy week of action for Lady Jays as volleyball season nears playoffs

Posted

The Three Lakes Bluejays had a busy week of volleyball following an unexpected week off of competition which saw a few cancellations.

Tuesday the Lady Jays headed to Phelps for a conference match-up against the Knights, winning in three straight by scores of 25-13, 25-18 and 25-15.

Freshman Malia Szews had a solid three games, leading the team in attacks, digs and serves.

Following that match the team hosted the soon-to-be conference champions from Laona-Wabeno.

Although the Jays weren’t able to record any wins, they showed more of what they were capable of doing as a team according to head coach Betsy Gruszynski.

After falling short in the first set, 11-25, the Jays rallied in the second set, running the score up to 28-30 though eventually falling in extra points.

“The level of determination and excitement from the team and the crowd was amazing,” said Gruszynski. “Even though we didn’t win, we were all finding things to celebrate about it.”

After taking a lead in the third set, momentum fell and the team lost the set, 20-25.

Freshman  Bella Kowalkowski led the team in attacks, followed closely by Szews who also led the team in digs. Sophomore Keira Bollmann led the team in serves.

Saturday the Jays took to the road for a tournament in Somerset for some competition normally unseen in the regular season.

Results included losses to Division 2 Somerset by scores of 15-25 and 18-25. They also fell to Division 4 schools Glenwood City (17-25, 25-21, 9-15) and Plum City-Elmwood (21-25, 10-25).

The lone win of the tourney came in a matchup with Division 5 Frederic who the Jays defeated in straight sets, 25-15, 25-20.

“Although illness and injury may have gotten the best of the team, the tournament provided an opportunity for them to try out alternative lineups and test their ability to play under adversity,” said Gruszynski.

At the serve, junior Kailyn Fogerty led the team making all 26 and providing some crucial runs of aggressive serves, coupled with Szews, who made all 37 of her serves for the day.

Fogerty led the team in digs, followed closely by Szews. Szews also led the team with 23 kills, hitting 37% for the day, followed by Bella Kowalkowski.

The Jays will travel to Prentice to take on the Buccaneers on Thursday, Oct. 17, for the last regular contest of the season.
