The Christmas Belles began 25 years ago as a simple holiday cookie exchange among six women who soon decided to do something more meaningful.
In 2001, the group was assigned a needy family from Vilas County. They purchased gifts for the children, delivered them to the Eagle River social services office, and went out to breakfast, feeling the joy of giving.
Fast forward to 2025, and the Christmas Belles program, which supports foster children during the holidays, is in full swing. The group held its annual potluck and meeting on Nov. 13 at Ely Memorial Church in Land O’ Lakes.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the group’s efforts, and the nearly 95 women in attendance — and those unable to attend — were each assigned a foster child to shop for, spending $100 of their own money on gifts.
Due to the recent government shutdown and SNAP disruptions, the Christmas Belles also donated to the Headwaters Food Pantry in Land O’ Lakes and the Watersmeet Food Pantry, with contributions surpassing previous years.
After enjoying a delicious potluck, the committee reflected on last year’s successes and shared plans for this year. Attendees read heartwarming letters from foster children and parents, highlighting the real impact of their generosity.
The Christmas Belles’ efforts bring joy and support to children in need. This holiday season, they will deliver hundreds of gifts to social service offices in Vilas and Gogebic counties, benefiting 154 foster children.
