The Northland Pines varsity soccer team has continued to run full speed ahead early this season, picking up two more wins last week against Merrill at home and on the road at Iron Mountain.
The Eagles beat the Bluejays 6-1 and blanked the Mountaineers 4-0 on the road last Thursday.
Although the team is 6-0 and has outscored opponents 31-2 this season, Head Coach Jamie Remme remains focused on keeping the team from thinking too far ahead.
“We continue to discuss the importance of focusing on the task at hand for the present moment, whether it’s working on a skill at practice, an attitude shift, or game-time mindset,” Remme said. “We do look ahead and know as a team what our long-term goals are, but we also understand that our short-term goals are critical for the success of our team.”
That mindset helped the Eagles dominate the two matchups last week, starting with the home tilt with Merrill.
Northland Pines got out to another quick start and kept the Bluejays behind the eight ball in terms of offensive opportunities. Pines pulled ahead by three goals by halftime, 3-0, and punched in three more goals in the second half to complete the win.
Coach Remme said this year’s roster has done great with different shifts and game plan changes. Everything is clicking on both ends of the field, with the team’s stiff defense turning into great offensive opportunities and ultimately goals.
“The offense and defense are playing well as a team and have been responding well to shifts in our game plan,” Remme explained.
The Eagles will face a three-game slate this week, which started with a home game against Antigo this past Tuesday. Pines will then travel to face Rhinelander this Thursday, Sept. 17, for a 7 p.m. kickoff. Columbus Catholic will then travel to Eagle River this Saturday, Sept. 19, at 1 p.m. As of this writing, Northland Pines and Lakeland, two undefeated teams, will face each other on Tuesday, Sept. 22, in Eagle River at 4:30 p.m.
