Posted

Music and drama students at Northland Pines High School in Eagle River will present the classic Disney musical “The Little Mermaid” in three upcoming performances. Show times are Friday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m.; Saturday, Feb. 14, at 7 p.m.; and Sunday, Feb. 15, at 2 p.m. in the school auditorium.

This family-friendly musical is based on the 1989 Disney movie “The Little Mermaid” and the classic Hans Christian Andersen story. Ariel, a mermaid princess, is fascinated by the human world and falls in love with Prince Eric after saving him from a shipwreck. To become human, she makes a dangerous deal with the sea witch, Ursula, to win his love in three days. A colorful group of sea creatures, including Ariel’s friends Sebastian, Flounder and Scuttle, help her navigate both the ocean and human worlds.

The musical features classic numbers such as “Kiss the Girl,” “Under the Sea,” “Part of Your World” and “Poor Unfortunate Souls.”

More than 50 NPHS students are involved in the cast, crew and pit orchestra. Students playing major roles include Lily Sellnow as Ariel, Katie Swendson as Ursula, Griffin Beyer as Prince Eric, Maverick Janusiak as King Triton, Wyatt Stebbeds as Sebastian, Liam Payne as Flounder, Tyler Price as Scuttle, Christian Mani as Grimsby, Nathan Miller as Chef Louis, and Timmy Stoltman and Liam Tabbert as the eels, Flotsam and Jetsam.

Ariel’s mermaid sisters will be played by Bernadette Laudando, Naomi Kadlec, Sophia Suriano, Chloe Moran, Sierra Starling and Miana Miller. Many other students will perform as sailors, chefs, seagulls and sea creatures.

Student technical crew members include sound designer Miles Kirschbaum, lighting designer Benjamin Braunel, spotlight technician Nelson Kirchbaum, and stage manager Kira Sandberg, along with a student stage crew.

The live pit orchestra, under the direction of Jennifer Anderson, includes NPHS students Chloe Tabbert, Hudson Warner, Joseph Laudando and Kayden Trollan. The orchestra also features adult players Rachel Strong, Bethany Puffer, Norma Yaeger, Linda Bender, Cindy Nelson, Laura Plank, Maya Woods, Kristyn Lohoff and Peter Aerts.

The production is directed by Kate Janssen, with assistant directing and choreography by Ann Perry, pit orchestra direction by Jennifer Anderson, acting coaching by Jeffrey Libby and Meg Hayes, costuming by Judy Clure, hair and makeup design by Amy Price, technical direction by Jeff Janssen, set construction by Gary Schwenn of Shiloh Construction, and set painting by Toni Swendson and Lou Deditz.

Tickets for the Feb. 13–15 performances are on sale in the NPHS office. Adult tickets are $5, while seniors (62 and older) and Northland Pines School District students are free. Remaining tickets will be sold at the door. Patrons are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance, as sellouts are possible. Seating is general admission, and doors will open 30 minutes prior to each performance.

The production will again host three reviewers from the Jerry Awards program through the Overture Center in Madison, who will review the show and provide feedback to students on many aspects of the production. Students recognized with nominations for outstanding work will be notified later this spring.
