It was defensive struggles in the second half for the Northland Pines varsity football team that led to a loss as it hosted the Shiocton Chiefs in the final game of the season at Northland Pines High School Oct. 17.
After just an 8-0 game at halftime, Shiocton poured it on in the final 24 minutes by scoring 30 points in the second half to take the commanding victory.
The Eagles shifted through two quarterbacks on senior night as the offense had opportunities to move the ball in a close first half. Shiocton struck first on a short touchdown deep in Northland Pines territory and converted on the two-point conversion for the 8-0 lead.
Pines entered the second quarter down by just one possession, but Shiocton pounded the rock in the second half with multiple touchdowns on the ground. Quarterback Isaiah Carton led the ground attack with 181 yards on 22 attempts.
For Northland Pines, wide receiver Jacob Beer ended his junior season with the lone score of the game for the Eagles. He finished with 96 yards on six receptions. Beer finished the season with seven receiving touchdowns.
Quarterback Aiden Minx finished the night 7-for-11,113 yards and one touchdown. He did rush for four yards on one attempt and threw an interception.
Senior running back Eli Kerner got the majority of the touches in the backfield, finishing his high school football career with 16 touches for 81 yards in his final game.
The Eagles can look to improve on their season next year, as the team should return the Minx-Beer combo, which worked well for most of the 2024 season.
