Pines volleyball falls in lone match on road at Medford

Posted

The Northland Pines volleyball team played just once last week, losing in straight sets at Medford in a Great Northern Conference (GNC) match Tuesday.

The Eagles got off to a slow start in the first set and Medford cruised to a 25-9 win.

The Eagles made it interesting in the other two sets, but the Raiders won both by identical 25-18 scores to sweep the match.

“Medford showcased two very strong, quick bigs who we struggled to stop throughout the match,” stated Pines coach Julie Smith. “However, beyond those two, we competed well and held our ground.”

Coach Smith also talked about some of the performances of her Eagles team that she was impressed with.

“Bella Nowak had two service aces and 12 assists, while Kami Neff led us with seven kills,” she said “Briana Sullivan had 10 digs and Aleena Ryan was right behind with nine.”

Despite another conference sweep, the coaching staff said the team learned important lessons that can help as the season progresses into October.

“We played with great effort and learned valuable lessons that will serve us in future matchups,” noted coach Smith. “I’m not disappointed, as the girls played hard, and now we have a better understanding of what to expect.”

The Eagles will play the Raiders again in the final leg of the GNC tournament which will be played on Saturday, October 12, at Medford. The tournament begins at 10 a.m.

The Northland Pines volleyball team was scheduled to play a GNC match this Tuesday, hosting Rhinelander for senior night at 7 p.m.

Pines will also travel to Tomahawk Thursday, Oct. 3, for a conference battle at 7 p.m.

The Eagles currently have a 0-6 record in the GNC and are 9-14 overall.
