Tara Lila Trails gets ready to host snowshoe race, celebration events

Posted

Saturday, Jan. 31 will be a busy day for Tara Lila Trails, as the organization gears up to host its second annual snowshoe race and 13th annual snowshoe celebration.

First up, organizers will put on the second annual Himanaji (hi-ma-NA-ji) Winter Challenge 5k snowshoe race at the Ripco Road Park location of Tara Lila (7750 Ripco Road).

According to Chris Nafziger, Tara Lila operations manager, this event allows visitors and locals alike a chance to physically test themselves against the snowy North Woods.

“The snow base is excellent this year, which will provide a great opportunity for this test of speed and endurance,” he said.

Race registration opens at 9 a.m., with the start of the race at 10 a.m. An awards ceremony will be held immediately following the conclusion of the race.

Cost is $30 to participate, and all racers receive a monogrammed knit hat and completion ribbon. Registration can be completed by visiting taralila.org/himanaji-winter-challenge.

“As this event grows, we are encouraging people to come cheer on the racers, and there are volunteer opportunities to help make this event great,” Nafziger added. “All proceeds for the race will be donated to the Three Eagle Trail Foundation and Trees for Tomorrow.”

Then, starting at 3 p.m., the 13th annual Snowshoe Celebration will take place at Tara Lila’s Section 9 Road Park location, at 4650 Section 9 Road.

This is a free family event that kicks off with a naturalist-led snowshoe leaving the parking lot at 3 p.m., that travels the 1.2-mile Sampatha Trail. From 3 to 8 p.m., guests can take self-guided snowshoe hikes as well as enjoy a campfire with free smores and hot cocoa. As evening approaches, there will be a quiet luminary walk snowshoe through the trails lit by tealights. Nafziger noted the trails will be groomed and open for snowshoeing all evening long.

“Come celebrate the bounty of snow in the North Woods,” he said.
