The No. 1-seeded Three Lakes-Phelps girls softball team kept its playoff hopes alive with a seventh-straight win, as the Jays were named regional champions after a 12-2 win over four-seeded Niagara May 29 in Three Lakes.
Eight runs crossed the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning to pull away to advance to sectionals.
Head coach Jerry Adamovich talked highly about both sides of the ball, as the team clicks on all cylinders at the right time.
“The girls are on top of their game defensively and offensively,” Adamovich said. “Every girl had at least one hit with Kassidy Williams and Malia Szews, with three hits, and Riley Lob with two.”
Williams and Szews started things off in the second by driving in three of the four runs in the inning with a two-RBI double and an RBI double, respectively.
Niagara couldn’t cut into the deficit in the top of the third or fourth as Kylee Wilson pitched a scoreless game until the fifth. She surrendered two earned runs in the top half of the fifth to make it a 4-2 game. She struck out four hitters and walked three in the win.
The Bluejays added the eight runs in the bottom half, including RBIs by Lily Gleason, Haylee Barnekow, Callie Wilson, Wilson (Kylee), Williams and Szews.
A 15-0 win against Goodman-Pembine in the regional semifinal May 27 put Three Lakes-Phelps into this game.
The team advanced to the sectional round and faced Northern Lakes foe Laona-Wabeno Monday night in the semifinals. Three Lakes-Phelps came away with a 6-3 win and will face No. 1-seeded Almond-Bancroft in the sectional final at Almond-Bancroft Thursday, June 5, at 4:30 p.m.
