Throwing the intern  to the wolves,  a summer tradition

Dear Readers:

As we all know, summer is a busy time in the Northwoods. That is true for the News-Review office as we juggle event coverage, preview stories, and the hustlings and bustlings of happenings across the area.

This is also the time of year when we put out our Vacation Week publication which features advertising businesses, upcoming events and helpful information for visitors to the area.

Each summer, we bring in a little extra help in the form of our summer intern to help get VW — or sometimes even V-Dub as it’s called in “the biz” — out the door.

This year we have been blessed to welcome a former Land O’ Lakes resident and Northland Pines graduate, Alice Gabotchenko.

Alice is currently pursuing a career in law in Green Bay, but started cutting her teeth in the world of reporting during her last semester as an intern for the MMC Press Times publication.

I’m a little late writing this up since she actually came on staff at the tail end of May. But there was a frantic push to get our first VW finished and teach her at least the basic ins-and-outs of what we’re doing, before throwing her to the wolves while I worked on early deadlines for the News-Review.

With things a little calmer (at least for the moment), her duties this summer focus on interviewing and photographing businesses that are being featured in the publication, and gathering information on the huge amount of community events taking place across Headwaters Country. Sounds easy, you say? It’s not as easy as one might think.

But that’s where our local organizations come in. We get submissions from all types of nonprofits or community-minded groups that help fill our publications with interesting events while also garnering publicity for themselves. It’s a very symbiotic relationship; one that keeps the local news going.

If you have something you’d like to share with us, we just ask you to include the five Ws (what, where, when, why and who), and brief captions and IDs if you’re submitting photos.

We welcome photo submissions and preview stories all year round from the public. We appreciate you thinking of us and dropping us a line!

And for businesses, we have a set of ad reps on hand waiting to help you with all your advertising needs! Whether it’s in the News-Review/Three Lakes News, Northwoods Trader, VW, or any of our other special publications put out throughout the year, just give us a call for more information.

Your support of the community paper helps keep the entire area informed and allows us to continue on as the newspaper of record for Vilas County and parts of Oneida County.

In the meantime, keep an eye out for our summer Vacation Week publication. We’ve made a few changes this year, the biggest one being that instead of a weekly pub, we are now doing it monthly. It’s included with subscription newspapers and also available on racks around the Northwoods area and highlights advertising businesses, upcoming community events, and even some safety and outdoor recreation tips. Did I mention this is a free publication?

Any businesses that would like to get in and support their local news organization while also being featured in the 10,000-press run, call the office at 715-479-4421 to speak to a sales representative. And if you have a story idea, shoot me an email at mdrew@mmclocal.com.
