Trees For Tomorrow (TFT) in Eagle River has announced plans to build a new outdoor classroom and community gathering space, which it says will enhance outdoor learning and strengthen community connections for years to come.
After years of planning and generous contributions, construction on the John and Melissa Besse Outdoor Classroom is set to begin late summer 2025.
As one of the longest-running environmental education centers in Wisconsin, TFT continues to adapt to meet the needs of modern learners. While nature itself has been the greatest teacher, this new 30- by 60-foot pavilion provides the infrastructure to elevate TFT programs, offering students and teachers a comfortable, sheltered, and technology-enhanced environment for engaging, hands-on experiences in the outdoors.
“This project is about more than just a building,” says Cheryl Todea, executive director of TFT. “It’s an investment in the future of environmental education. It’s about creating a space where curiosity is sparked, where lessons come to life, and where the next generation of environmental stewards can thrive.”
A year-round community hub
While the pavilion will primarily serve as an outdoor classroom to support TFT’s Student Outdoor Learning Experiences for K-12 students, it will also be available for public rental, opening its doors to community members for weddings, family reunions, business retreats, nonprofit meetings, and more.
This dual-purpose design maximizes both educational and community impact, ensuring the facility serves the North Woods region year-round.
Powered by generosity and vision
TFT said this project is made possible through the visionary support of the John and Melissa Besse Foundation, whose major gift serves as the cornerstone for the project. In recognition of their tremendous generosity, the pavilion will be named after them.
“Our family was inspired by the Outdoor Classroom at TFT because it’s the perfect space to spark the future of natural resource leaders in our communities,” said representatives of the foundation, which continues the Besses’ legacy of civic engagement. “TFT’s mission is important work to our family, and we feel grateful that our neighbors and families will have this place to come to and continue learning about woods and water.”
Many other supporters made financial and in-kind contributions.
Looking aheadThe outdoor classroom is expected to be ready for programming and public use by the fall of 2025.
TFT invites all community members, educators, alumni, and partners to join in celebrating this exciting addition. Grand opening event details will be shared later this year.
How to donateTFT still welcomes donations and sponsorships to help bring the John and Melissa Besse Outdoor Classroom to life.
“Whether you’re a business, family, foundation, or individual who believes in outdoor education and community connection, your support makes a lasting impact,” TFT said.
