Windigo drop just second game of season to Steel

Posted

The Wisconsin Windigo mens hockey team fell on the road Saturday, splitting a Midwest Division double header with the Chippewa Steel.

After opening Friday with a 2-0 shutout win, the team would fall, 3-2 in Saturday’s contest.

Friday the team got goals from Cashen Naeva and Braydon Beahm, both which came in the third period. It was enough to hold up as goalie Lucas Szyszka stopped all 29 shots he faced on the night to earn the win.

The Windigo special teams, in particular their defensive penalty kill team also excelled as they managed to disperse time on 10 separate Wisconsin penalties, not surrendering a goal.

The team wasn’t able to keep the same momentum Saturday, as a 2-2 tie went into extra time and eventually a shootout where the home Steel were able to take a 2-0 advantage and the 3-2 win.

Scoring goals Saturday for Wisconsin were Michael Ryan and Logan Nickolaus. Syska stopped 36 of 38 shots overall on the night, though still got tabbed with the loss.

The Windigo now rest at 8-1-0-1 in the Midwest Division which totals them 17 points, two points better than second place Anchorage (15).

The team will hit the road for two weeks as they travel to Alaska next with two matchups apiece with Kenai River and Anchorage.

The team’s next home matchup comes Nov. 1-2 when they welcome in-state rival Janesville to the Eagle River Recreation Arena. Game times are set for 7 p.m. both nights.
