Halloween is just around the corner, and while families are preparing with costumes and pumpkins, the Oneida County Health Department also reminds people to get their flu and Covid vaccines.
“Respiratory illness season is creeping up, and vaccination is one of the best ways to protect yourself, family, friends and neighbors,” the department said. “It takes about two weeks after a flu vaccine for your body to build protection. Flu and Covid vaccines can lower your risk of serious illness, hospitalization, and complications. Getting vaccinated now can help make sure you are protected as flu activity increases.”
Health officials say vaccination is especially important for adults over age 65, people living in nursing homes or other long-term care facilities, people with certain health conditions such as heart or lung disease, and people with weakened immune systems.
The department also reminds the public of a few simple steps to prevent the spread of illness this flu season:
• Stay home and away from others when you are sick. Return to normal activities when your symptoms are improving and you have been fever-free without medication for at least 24 hours.
• Cover coughs and sneezes.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
• Clean frequently touched surfaces, such as doorknobs and countertops.
Flu and Covid vaccines are available at Oneida County Health Department with no appointment needed. Walk-ins are welcome during office hours, Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
