Fishing restrictions enacted on lakes within reservation

Tribe says goal is to protect fish populations

The Lac du Flambeau Tribal Council recently approved Resolution No. 8(26) to protect fish populations and natural resources by implementing temporary fishing restrictions on several lakes located within the reservation boundary.

Under this resolution, the following lakes are closed to walleye and muskie fishing by nonmembers until the Lac du Flambeau Tribal Fish Hatchery determines that the lakes may be reopened: Flambeau Lake, Big Crooked Lake, White Sand Lake, Big Crawling Stone Lake, Whitefish Lake, the Sugarbush Chain (Upper, Middle, and Lower), and Pokegama Lake.

In addition, the council has approved a ban on forward trolling by nonmembers on all lakes within the reservation boundary.

This action was taken after review of recommendations from the Tribal Fish Hatchery, which determined that forward trolling provides an unfair advantage and contributes to overfishing and overharvesting.

According to a press release issued by the tribe, “These measures are being implemented to protect the tribe’s natural resources and to ensure the long-term sustainability of fish populations for future generations.”

The Tribal Fish Hatchery manager will work with the Tribal Public Relations Office to provide information to tribal members and the public regarding these closures and any future updates.

“The Lac du Flambeau Tribal Council and Natural Resources remain committed to protecting the health, welfare, and resources of the tribe,” the press release concluded.
