Brothers Michael and Peter Anderson have signed a lease with the City of Eagle River to operate the restaurant at Eagle River Golf Course for the upcoming season. It will be operated as Sandbaggers Clubhouse pub and restaurant.
Mayor Deb Brown is excited for this new partnership. She has called the restaurant “the missing piece” of the golf course experience in recent years as leases have changed hands a number of times.
Brown met with the Andersons recently to discuss their vision of the restaurant and what services it will provide, saying they have a lot of really good ideas.
“It was a really good meeting with them,” she said. “They’ll give it everything they’ve got, and be able to staff it out there.”
The Anderson brothers are both lifelong Eagle River residents, with family roots going back almost a century. They also both bring extensive background experience in the area.
Peter has been a small-business owner for more than three decades, including the operation of Blend coffee shop in downtown Eagle River for nearly 10 years. He also has served multiple times as president of the Eagle River Area Chamber of Commerce.
Michael served in the U.S. Army for 23 years, and has received formal culinary training. More recently, he has served as Eagle River fire chief for the last 10 years. He just retired from the position earlier this month.
Both also are longtime users of the golf course and plan to bring their commitment while operating the Clubhouse Pub and Restaurant.
Also serving as full-time manager will be Angie Anderson, who was owner/operator of Blend with Peter. Since selling the business, she has remained actively engaged in the hospitality industry.
“We are longtime users of the course and understand the expectations of league players, regular golfers and visitors,” the Andersons said in their application. “We recognize the frustration that inconsistent food and beverage service has caused in recent seasons, and our goal is to provide dependable hours, efficient service, quality food, and a welcoming atmosphere that reflects positively on the course and the city.”
They plan to offer counter service with a menu that includes signature burgers, brats, hot dogs, sandwiches, salads, fryer items and league specials.
Proposed hours of operation will be grab-and-go breakfast from 8 to 11:30 a.m. daily. Restaurant hours will be 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. daily, with the kitchen open until 8 p.m. on league nights. The bar will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on league nights, with a bar cart operating six to seven days per week, weather permitting.
The Andersons noted in their proposal that these hours may be extended as staffing allows. Michael noted that while most positions are filled for the summer, they are still seeking cooks available for either a full-time or part-time position. City Administrator Robin Ginner said that cleaning and other projects within the clubhouse are currently underway ahead of the opening of the golf course’s summer season.
The lease went into effect March 1 and was okayed for one year by the city council.
