Northwoods Legion moves into tonight’s game 1-0

Posted

The Northwoods Legion Baseball team out of Three Lakes started its AA Wisconsin Legion regional play on the right foot this afternoon by defeating Medford 9-2. That puts them at 1-0 for regionals as the team now heads into a break before tonight’s matchup with Merrill.

Things got rolling for both offenses early on this morning, with Northwoods taking an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Medford responded with two runs in the top of the second to hold a 2-1 advantage for a few innings. Both starting pitchers settled down until the bottom of the fourth, where Northwoods broke the game open with a seven-run inning to make it an 8-2 game. Another run came across in the fifth to close out the scoring. Aiden Minx pitched six strong innings for Northwoods. Sam Koshuta came in and closed the door in the seventh. If Northwoods wins tonight’s game, the schedule will officially turn to a regional final tomorrow at 10 a.m. Their opponent would be determined by how the second game from this afternoon turns out. If Medford loses, they are eliminated with an 0-2 record, and tonight’s game would mean nothing in terms of standings. Northwood and Merrill would face each other tomorrow in the regional final. The only difference tonight’s game would make is a fight for who only needs to win one game or two.

If Merrill loses this afternoon, Medford would need Merrill to lose again against Northwoods for a chance at redemption in the regional final on Saturday. If Medford also wins the afternoon game and Merrill wins tonight against Northwoods, the pool play schedule would reset for Saturday, and the teams would play again since all three teams ended at 1-1.
