Where do the Packers stand this year?

Posted

The NFL season officially kicks off this week with Thursday Night Football, and the Green Bay Packers open the season in Green Bay this Sunday afternoon against the Detroit Lions. I return with a rundown of the upcoming season and my record prediction as I go through the 2025 schedule.
When the schedule was released back in May, I was hesitant to start, as the schedule seemed to be tough, especially early on.
Starting out with the powerhouse Detroit Lions, plus 2024 NFL Rookie of the Year Jayden Daniels, in primetime week two, is a tough break for the Packers. Luckily, both of those contests are at home. Add that on top of a home matchup with Joe Burrow and Jamar Chase in week six.
I think the offense will be fine this year and will hopefully lead the charge after a disappointing end to the season last year. I still question the back end of our defense, which can be a major blow as the season moves ahead, especially if there are injuries.

My prediction: 10-7

I can see this season going a lot of different ways, with big matchups being played in Lambeau resulting in wins.
Despite losing both of its coordinators to head coaching jobs, Detroit still has a ton of offensive firepower that I think our secondary can’t keep up with. In a game where I think Josh Jacobs and Jahmyr Gibbs go head to head and dominate, the Lions leave Green Bay with a win, but won’t win the division.
A week two Thursday night game against Washington is where Green Bay will bounce back, leading to a three-game win streak against the Commanders, at the Browns and at the Cowboys on Sunday Night Football. The Packers enter the week five bye week with a 3-1 record.
A tough matchup out of the bye week against the Bengals will push the Packers to 3-2, before winning two of the next three against the Cardinals and Panthers, but losing one in between to Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers, another primetime game in week 8. That will put their record at 5-3 after week nine.
A marquee matchup with the Super Bowl champs is week 10 at home, which will end in a tough loss, I believe. Wins against the Giants, Vikings, Lions on Thanksgiving and the Bears will put Green Bay in what I believe will be contention for the division at 9-4 to that point, but will falter to a tough late schedule. A road game in the Mile High City is never a fun one, and the Broncos look to have turned that ship around again. That will be a game Green Bay loses after a four-game winning streak.
Their final victory will Dec. 20 against the Bears, before losing to the Ravens at home and gaining a series split with Minnesota in the final week with a loss. Week 17 against Baltimore could in interesting because if the Ravens have locked up a playoff seeding, they may rest Lamar Jackson and other starters.
I think the Packers have a shot at the Division title this year if the defense shows up on the back end.
