“Three Candles for Tiny the Fawn” is the latest release by local author Thomas Heckenkamp and illustrator Claudie Bergeron, offering young readers a delightful story set in the heart of the North Woods of Wisconsin.
Based on a real-life bond between a man and a deer, the book follows the tale of Tiny, a fawn, and a unique birthday celebration highlighting the beauty of friendship and trust.
Heckenkamp, a Vietnam War veteran and former team leader of the elite 75th Army Rangers, has taught high school sciences and worked in home construction in Australia for nearly a decade. His experiences include time spent in Colombia’s Andes Mountains and teaching snowboarding at a ski resort in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
The inspiration for this story came from his personal connection with a baby deer while living in a log cabin in the North Woods in 2021.
The book’s illustrator, Claudie C. Bergeron, brings her deep knowledge of animal anatomy and love for nature scenes to life.
Drawing on her study of classic artists and Disney-style animation, Bergeron’s artistic skill beautifully complements the heartwarming narrative, adding a rich visual dimension to the story.
